Checkerboard…

by Kate on March 16, 2010

The pins have been removed, the quilting finished and the binding is on.

I based this quilt on Rita’s checkerboard that can be found in the ‘bricks and stones’ pattern. A fantastic pattern and I am looking forward to making the entire quilt next time round.

As this is for a a new babe (who hasn’t arrived yet), I wanted to keep the size small and palette neutral. A mixture of oranges, greens and natural tones make up the checkerboard which is then framed in cream linen.

I have used linen in my quilts before but never to frame or border a quilt, it’s not something I am in a hurry to repeat. The linen was so slippery and stretchy, quite a few choice curse words were uttered whilst quilting, not to mention when it came to sewing on the binding!

More importantly though, this quilt was made with much love and I know my friend and her new baby will treasure it.

I thought I would leave you with a sneak peek of what I have been working on today, showcasing some of Australia’s very talented fabric designers. As soon as the back is pieced, it will be off to Karen to work her quilting magic.

When is a labour of love a labour of love without a few choice curse words along the way?

Wowee! A supercute baby quilt, in a really soft and neutral color palette that I absolutely adore.

Fav quilting! I can very well image that the linen would have provided you with some stressful moments! Beautifully made.

gorgeous! That will definitely be treasured! Linen makes me swear too. It's got a mind of it's own, despite drowning it in spray starch. I was told to try carolina chambray instead, and I really like it. It's hard to find, but worth searching for!

Can't wait to see what else you've been working on!

Lovely! I know what you mean about linen in quilts, but when it turns out right (easily) it is well worth it. I love the weight it lends a quilt. This is a gorgeous little quilt, thanks for sharing.

This quilt is really lovely, I love the the fabrics you used. And I know what you mean about linen, it can be so slippery sometimes!
