A little while ago I spotted a hand pieced, six-pointed star quilt hanging up at Patchwork on Central Park. It is breathtaking and the fussy cutting that has gone into those stars is nothing short of inspirational.
Then, I saw these stars that Rita’s mother in law created – stunning.
Sufficiently inspired, Chris and I headed off to Kate’s hand piecing class which are held at Patchwork and learnt the basics of hand piecing – I loved every minute of it.
I’ve always considered myself far too impatient to hand piece, but I wanted to give it a go and I am glad I did.
It is a long term project but I hope one day to create something as beautiful as the two quilts that have inspired me.

This is gorgeous! Love the colors :)
Good for you! Your block is great! I, too, have been inspired by Rita's MIL, but I have yet to do anything about it. I can be a pretty impatient sewer, but I think it would be nice to have some longer term handwork projects.
Just amazing for your first hand piecing! Beautiful!

Hey firstly, LOVE the new look of the blog! It's really crisp and fresh. Gorgeous. Secondly I just know I wouldn't have the patience for hand piecing, especially something as intricate as this pattern but I am in awe of anyone who does! Go you!
Gorgeous! And your points in the middle all meet, have trouble getting mine nice and snug
BTW Postie was just here!! Love it!! Thank you so much!! xox
Ooh I love those stars. Although I love machine work, hand piecing is lovely to do in the garden, in front of the tv, sitting chatting with a cup of tea etc. I'm into hexagons at the moment but, seeing your picture, I'm going to try those stars next. They are gorgeous.
Wow!
That is one gorgeous block Kate.
I love your header so much.
I'm so glad you've got the bug too! Hand piecing is awesome!
LOVE that star so much – you've got me itching to have a go with diamonds!!!
I'm working on blocks similar to that for my first quilt ever. They do look stunning, don't they?
That is stunning, Kate. Love that 'washed out' pink with the grey. Can't wait to see more ;-)
Your block is lovely Kate and look how well your points match. I love that strawberry fabric, looks great with the dots. xo

very nice – and I love those strawberries!
The way I figure it, this sort of project can only be a (long term) labour of love – but it's ones like these that are in the family for the long haul. Gorgeous stuff kiddo.
Beautiful work Kate! I love hand piecing.
Just.so.much. x
Well done Kate, the hand piecing looks like it suits you! And to start with stars is impressive, having to deal with bias as well. x
