The Granny

by Kate on July 22, 2011

I’m sure when most people think of crochet, they think of the granny square. The humble granny is how I learnt to crochet and if you are thinking about learning, I reckon that’s where you should start too.

The Granny

From this little block, you will learn to chain, treble, work in the round and read a pattern. Pip has a great how-to here.

This cushion comprises of 16 rounds in four different colours, the back is a solid grey granny square and it is fastened shut with some vintage buttons. More details on ravelry.

Buttons

And it is now flying to the UK where I hope it will be a welcome addition to a fellow crafters sewing space.

The glass vases were acquired yesterday in Tyabb and I couldn’t help put include them in the photo, they just look like they were meant to be together.

Cute cushion! LOVE the buttons :) Where do you source your vintage buttons from? My Mum won’t part with hers yet :)

The op shop is a good place to start but if you can’t be bothered to hunt then I would head straight to etsy!

Those vases bring out the colours of your cushion beautifully.

Who would have thought that the humble granny square is the reason I love crochet :)

What a lovely cushion! I’ve learned how to make granny squares now and I don’t think I’ll ever need to learn anything else!! They’re so brilliant, especially in pretty colours like those…

oh me too ! i learned 3 years ago from a book with the granny square in mind !!
the mix of the colors is so pretty. blue is the trend this year.
it is so well made. i made a grey & cream one (really the same) last winter (yeah i know my blog has become a craft desert lately — doesn’t mean i keep my hands still !!!) but haven’t managed the button thing ! each time i tried to fill it with the insert and close it, the buttons won’t stay in … maybe i have to get bigger ones ?)
anyway, lucky recipient :)

I love the granny square! My lounge chair covers are made up of granny squares (found at an op-shop and a perfect fit) and they look gorgeous! I love the colours you’ve used here, very inspiring – maybe one day I’ll source a youtube tutorial and give it a go…
